Just watched morgan living for 30 days with partner on the US minimum wage.
MAN ALIVE WOULD I HATE TO BE POOR IN YOUR COUNTRY.
Seriously If anyone has seen it, Is there any truth to it?? Are there NO welfare handouts to help with housing and does it really cost over $1000 for two trips to the A&E deptment.
Tell me there has been artistic license aplenty in this documentary, I m still reeling from what I watched, Astonishing filmaking. (IF TRUE)
Here in Pinellas County Florida the average house is now in excess of $200,000. Small too. Anything less than $200,000 isn't that nice. There have been news articles about the fact that middle class teachers, cops and firefighters, et al.. are being squeezed out of living in this area due to housing costs.

Maybe he could go 30 days without pooping to really prove something to the world.

Well, if it weren't dramatic, it wouldn't be good TV and wouldn't have been shown.
The fact is, there are all kinds of programs for assistance to "low-income" people, from help in paying for energy costs, to housing assistance, to food programs. Some of this is government funded, much of it is private. In our city, the gas & electric company has a low-income assistance program and solicits donations to be sent in with people's payments. I know that at least two houses in my elementary school district are "Habitat for Humanity" houses that are occupied by low-income families that qualified for the houses by helping build them. The schools, the Scouts, the churches and individuals all contribute to our local food pantry that helps low-income people.
But they don't search you out, you have to find them. Morgan Spurlock could have had a LOT of help, but it would not have been as good of TV.
But most people don't live on two minimum wage incomes, at least not for long. A lot of entry level jobs, even in the fast food industry, are ABOVE minimum wage. And if you show any kind of initiative or work ethic you will quickly get raises.
I knew a guy in high school that had to marry his pregnant girlfriend, and drop out to work to support his family. He started out at a fast food restaurant; within 6 months he was managing the store, and within a year he was managing two stores and making pretty good money. He worked hard and was reasonably ambitious.
The point is, that anyone who wants to work and puts honest effort into it will almost certainly be making more than minimum wage. But that wouldn't be good TV.
I could go on and on about the minimum wage, but I'll just leave my comments to this:
For many good reasons, the minimum wage is not designed to be a living wage; therefore one should not expect to live off the minimum wage.

A Ted Kennedy bill to increase the wage annually is shot down.
The shocking thing from my point of view was the Health care and two trips to A&E costing $1000, One trip from a urine infection resulting in $24 of medicine and a sprained wrist resulting in an xray and bandage. A $1000 dollars, Cmon, do they want the poor to die!!!!!
As a whole we in the UK have gone completly the other way, and money is showered on the lower incomes so much so that,we are know at the IDIOTIC position that we pay people to stay at home, and our borders are a 1000 deep with immigrants looking to get on the gravy train.
So yes our situation is crappy as well.
But no matter what your income there is free(ish) Health care available for all.
